Wicklow's Squirrels Need Your Help

The National Parks & Wildlife Service has recently been informed of a case of squirrel pox virus [SQPV] in a red squirrel in Hollywood, Co. Wicklow. This follows on from confirmed incidences of the disease in two woodlands in Northern Ireland earlier in the year.

SQPV is carried by grey squirrels which appear to be immune to its effects. Its impact on the red squirrel population can however be devasting. In areas of England where SQPV has broken out, red squirrel extinction is accelerated 15 fold.

It is not clear why SQPV is turning up now, given that greys have been here for 100 years. But, the confirmation of the disease here, when red squirrels appear to be making a come back in some areas, is very disappointing. However, it is possible that we are only looking at isolated local outbreaks and there are some encouraging early signs from the North that some reds may be less susceptible than others.

National Parks & Wildlife Service staff are keeping a close eye on the situation and we are asking you can help. In particular, can you keep your eyes and ears open for any reports of sickly red squirrels. SQPV produces Myxomatosis type symptoms and is highly infectious. It can be passed on at bird tables and nut feeders. (you can see some photos here if you wish, but brace yourself, they are not pleasant!: http://northernredsquirrels.org.uk/pox2.htm).

Please contact us with details of any confirmed or suspected report, including accurate location information and, ideally, a photo.
