Lough Nahanagan in Winter

Lough Nahanagan in Winter

Lough Nahanagan is a corrie lake that has been transformed into the lower lake of the Turlough Hill hydroelectric power plant. The fort-like manmade resevoir on the top of Turlough Hill can only barely be made out in the winter mist in this photo. The lake level in Lough Nahanagan rises and falls. Water is pumped up to the upper resevoir during times of low electricity usage. When maximum electricity is required, the water is run back down through underground turbines, thereby generating extra power.
