Peregrine Chicks

Peregrine Chicks

Peregrine numbers worldwide plummetted in the 1960's as dangerous insecticides worked their way up the foodchain. A survey in 1969 found only 14 known pairs in Ireland. The banning of DDT has resulted in a dramatic recovery in the population, and the species is now doing well again. The survival of these three chicks is very much dependent on the food supply. In a good year all three might make it to fledging, but more usually, the youngest chick will not survive.
