Arctic Char
Many of Wicklow's deep mountain lakes were home to the Arctic Char. Each lake had its own genetically unique population. Sadly, numbers declined, perhaps to acidification of the waters, and the species was recently declared extinct in Co. Wicklow. A re-introduction programme has started in the Upper Lake in Glendalough.
