Red Squirrel

Red Squirrel

The Red Squirrel is Ireland's native squirrel species, but its numbers have declined many times throughout history. Removal of the forests and hunting for its fur eradicated the species altogether on at least two occassions, but it was re-introduced again each time. Loss of suitable habitat still limits its numbers, but the biggest threat is the introduction of the larger Grey Squirrel from North America. When the larger Grey Squirrel moves into an area inhabited by Reds, the smaller Reds soon move on or die out.
