NOTE: Our Education Centre is currently closed due to the Corvid-19 Pandemic.

No decision has yet been made on when or how we shall re-open, but at this point in time we are not taking any bookings.

Our education programme aims to raise awareness of Ireland’s rich natural heritage. Both primary and secondary schools are welcome to book a day with us. Our range includes a variety of themed nature awareness days for primary schools, and ecology, geography and environmental days for secondary schools. Third level groups, summer projects, special needs groups and adult groups are also welcome. We are happy to tailor a day to suit you.

Adult Leaders

Groups must be accompanied by one adult leader for every ten students or children visiting the Education Centre. This is for the following reasons:

  • Safety
  • Child protection
  • Quality of teaching experience
  • Insurance

These adult leaders are responsible for the students on the day. Please note that the National Park reserves the right to turn away groups that arrive with less than the agreed number of leaders.

The Education Centre is located on the Miners’ Road beside the Upper Lake in Glendalough. Parking is at the privately-run Upper Lake car park. There is a parking charge.

Please be aware that many buses find access to the Upper Lake area difficult due to the small bridge en route. Mini buses usually find it easier. When you book your bus, please specify that you need to go to the Upper Lake.

Directions to the Upper Lake Car Park

Follow signs to Glendalough. In the valley of Glendalough, drive past the OPW Visitor Centre and the Glendalough Hotel. Go over a narrow bridge. Continue for 1.5 km. The Upper Lake car park is on your left at the end of the road.

Finding the Education Centre

To walk to the Education Centre from the Upper Lake car park, take the path along the river (beside the car park entrance). Go right over a bridge, and then left up the Miners’ Road. The Education Centre is 200m up this path.

Toilets: The Education Centre is a small building and has no public toilets. Please use the toilets at the Upper Lake car park.

Food: Students are advised to bring a packed lunch. Food stalls selling chips and ice cream are available at the upper lake car park, but are not open throughout the year.

What to Wear

Our programme is an outdoor one, regardless of weather. Glendalough is a mountain location and can be very exposed. Please advise all students and children to wear several warm layers and to bring a spare set of clothes.

Midges & Ticks

In warm, humid weather, biting midges can be a problem. Visitors are advised to bring midge repellent on such days.

Lyme disease is a rare but serious disease carried by ticks. Given that ticks are present in Wicklow, schools are advised to make students and parents aware of the symptoms of Lyme disease. Information will be sent to you when you book.
